MOBilise 2008 Conference Agenda
MOBilise 2008

Dear Marist Old Boy (MOB)

MOBilise 2008 – Marist Old Boys Conference ( agenda here)

Background

The MARIST OLD BOYS & FRIENDS (SYDNEY) ASSOCIATION (core team of 12) has been meeting over the past 15 months with the aim of fund raising for the betterment of facilities and education of the boys at Marist Brothers’ High School.

We are an incorporated society since our start up in October 2006 and have audited accounts of our activities.

Fund raising activities have included a dance/dinner for 300, a kati evening for 100, selling lovo and food at the Fiji Day 2007 stall at Granville Park.

We also hosted a thank you party for all our supporters (over 200) here in Sydney last year and screened the Bledisloe Cup match between NZ v Australia in the hall.

During the MOB reunion trip to Suva in July 2007 we had discussions with the Fiji Old Boys and committed to the school principal delivery of computer equipment and internet connectivity to the school as a project.

In January 2008, we have delivered our first project worth approx $6,000 of computers, printers, and an air-conditioning unit for the computer room and internet connection via Kidanet to MBHS in Suva. We firmly believe that the students will benefit from access to a wide array of information on the World Wide Web.

Thanks to Fiji MOBs like Bernie Hong Tiy and Fernando Lobendahn in Suva, we were able to freight all the equipment (free on board) to the school. Other MOBs in Suva have also volunteered their time to install the equipment.  We appreciate their assistance.

Next few projects

  • The first fund raiser for 2008 will be a harbour cruise around Sydney harbour on Saturday 19th April 2008 with dinner, entertainment and dancing on board.
Take in the sights of one of the world’s greatest harbours as you enjoy a feast of island food. As there is a limit on the number of guests on this vessel, it would be advisable to make reservations early.
Tickets are available at $50 each. Alcohol may be purchased on board.
Please contact committee members listed below.

  • Our next big event for the year will be a full day conference to be held on Friday 1st August 2008 at the Mytilenian Hall, 225 Canterbury Rd, Canterbury. We have called it MOBilise 2008. As the name suggests, it is a call to action for all MOBs of all eras, in this hour of need. The conference seeks to gain support from other MOBs in Australia to work on worthwhile initiatives and fundraising that will improve standards and facilities at the school. Our ultimate goal is to elevate our school back to its pre-eminence through the combined actions of the MOB network locally and overseas, the school management and the MBHS School Board.

  • Br Paul who will be our chief guest visiting Sydney on the week beginning Friday 25th July 2008 to Monday 4th August 2008.
We are inviting Br Paul Lavelle to Sydney at our expense. During his stay in Sydney, Br Paul will visit many schools within the Catholic Education system in the Inner West. These school visits and associated activities have been pre-arranged by our MOB Sydney Committee.

Other Events planned for that week

  • Informal events during the week, e.g. visit Chinatown, Pyrmont Fish Markets, Flemington Markets, IMAX Theatre and other Sydney city tourist spots

  • Watch the Bledisloe Cup rugby match LIVE at Telstra stadium - NZ v Australia on 26th July 2008. Br Paul and a bunch of MOB’s will be there to cheer their teams on. Limited tickets available. Preference will be given to overseas/interstate visitors. Please contact Peter Chan peter.a.chan@optus.com.au if you are interested in being part of this group.

  • The 2008 Marist Social Function on Saturday 2nd August 2008 at the Mytilenian Hall, 225 Canterbury Road Canterbury. There will be time for networking, catching up with old mates and old flames.

  • A MOBs Mass with the Fiji Community at Hunters Hill Catholic Church, Mary St, Hunters Hill – Sunday 27th July 2008 at 4pm. Rereshments served after mass..

  • A picnic lunch at Bicentennial Park, Homebush for all old boys, their families and friends after Mass on Sunday 3rd August 2008. This will be an ideal opportunity for all families to interact and the last opportunity to meet with Br Paul before he departs for Fiji.

If you would like to attend any of the above activities or participate in the MOBilise 2008 conference please register with Peter Chan. You are most welcome. For interstate/overseas visitors we will be able to recommend reasonably cheap accommodation in areas close to these activities. Just contact any of the committee members for this information – their email addresses are on the cc line of this email.

As a last resort, we may be able to arrange billeting if no other accommodation option is available.

We are in the process of finalising the agenda for the conference and will advise all once this is done.

We look forward to hearing from all MOBs and trust you can make the trip to Sydney to attend this inaugural conference and watch the Bledisloe Cup between 2 great rugby nations.

Thank you and we look forward to your support and attendance at our fund raising events in 2008 and into the future.
