Simon Lavulo's 50th Birthday

The President of the Sydney MOBs, Simon Lavulo celebrated his 50th birthday at Padstow Bowling Club on Saturday 3rd of April 2010.

About 170 of Simon's close friends and family were treated to a fantastic night of food, dancing, and entertainment. The Marist Old boys and members of Simon's family assisted in the preparation of food which included roast pigs, palusami, curries, chowmein and a variety of desserts. Entertainment was provided by a polished FIXX8 Band who played popular dance music that had the pumped up crowd on the dance floor all night. A Cook Island dance number was performed by Shepherd Lockington and his fiance Cynthia Dunne, who grew up with Simon in Raiwaqa in the 70s.

But the highlight of the night was the traditional Tongan presentation of kava and tauluga performed by his beautiful young daughter Laverna. It recognised Simon's Tongan ancestral roots. It brought tears to his eyes. A fitting tribute to a humble leader, a devoted father, grandfather and husband, a truly decent human being, highly respected by his peers.

Happy Birthday Mr President.

Mass at Houng's Residence On the 16th of June, the family and friends of Jenny and Ben Houng gathered at their residence to celebrate a very special joyous and holy occassion. It was their son Clayton's 15th Birthday as well as the day they celebrated Mass with the blessing of the house. Fr Mateo who has been living with the Houngs for the week was the celebrant.  Fr Mateo is no stranger to the MOB having spent time with us when he last visited in 2008.

Following Mass, Clayton and Fr Mateo went throughout the house, blessing all the rooms. The hosts prepared a fantastic meal, enjoyed by all. The night was rounded off with a few bowls of grog while watching the second State of Origin Test between NSW and QLD.

We wish Clayton all the best for the future. We thank Fr Mateo for celebrating mass with us, for supporting our cause and for his evangelical mission in enriching the lives of the faithful in Savusavu. Vinaka.

Ratu Sukuna Day Charity Fundraiser The inaugural Ratu Sukuna Day Charity Fundraiser staged by the Social and Charitable Oasis Inc was held at the Mytilenian House on the 29th of May 2010. The purpose of this fundraiser was to help the victims of Cyclone Tomas which devastated Fiji a couple of months back.

This event was supported by the local Fiji community in Sydney, the MOBs as well as the Cook Island Community whose islands were also devasted by Cyclone Pat back in February. It was a night of great food, fantastic music, dancing and entertainment.  Special performances by a professional group of Cook Island dancers and the Sydney Fiji Catholic Youth who performed traditional mekes were the highlight of the evening. The band Tropical Groove,  made up of Niko Bulai, James Sharma, Paul Verma, JJ, Ioane and Simon Lavulo, entertained the party crowd with dance hits from the 70s to the present mixed in with popular Fijian songs.
